In the beginning of the book, Mr. Krupp is giving out student awards. He announces that the next award was for the most mature students. Melvin, confidently believing he was receiving the award, goes up onto the stage. But Mr. Krupp tells him to sit back down and that the award was for George and Harold. Mr. Krupp states that the reason the two received the award was because of the book they wrote. Mr. Krupp says the book's title out loud, causing all of the students to laugh. Mr. Krupp is angry and confused by this, and Melvin informs Mr. Krupp that he just said that he "swam in diarrhea, which is stinky." Mr. Krupp puts two and two together and realizes that the book was created just so he could accidentally say something hilarious and embarrassing in front of the students. Furious, Mr. Krupp and Melvin chase George and Harold all the way to their treehouse.
